MVP: Not cinema gold, but worth watching. If you are a stepparent, or (like me) have a stepparent that you love, this movie is for you. What starts off as an amusing concept eventually becomes a surprisingly touching story about the unique challenges that new step children and step parents face.
I did not expect to love this movie as much as I did. I was very pleasantly surprised. The movie is funny and entertaining. But it also has a beautiful message. Albeit a very niche message, but as someone who is a part of that niche, it struck a very heartwarming chord.
Gary is a very endearing character. Hilarious in a sort of confused and ‘take it in stride’ sort of way. He navigates the situation that he finds himself in with an admirable amount of grace and understanding. He is so easy to like, it is easy to overlook his mistakes and shortcomings. But don’t worry, he overcomes them in glorious heroics.
