My best friend gave me this wisdom recently.
When trying to learn about any broad subject, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information. A lot of resources assume a certain amount of prior knowledge on their subject, making them difficult to follow. It is very easy to get bogged down in details, and difficult to keep track of the big picture. When learning about something new, you need to start with the basics. Get an overview and go from there. So….
The best way to learn about anything is to read a children’s book about it.
If a children’s book exists on the subject you are interested in, it is probably a very good place to start. Children’s books don’t assume prior knowledge. They are lax with details so as not to confuse or obfuscate a subject. And they are entirely focused on communicating the big picture. Once you have a handle on the big picture, then you can safely dive into the minutia of details on your own.
